Preface

Enhance cultural self-confidence and revive Chinese animation

In November 2009, the "First China Animation Art Exhibition" sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and other departments was held at the National Art Museum of China. The exhibition systematically sorted out the history of Chinese animation and clearly proposed the development path of animation with Chinese characteristics. The proposition has had a great impact. At that time, it was not easy to do such an exhibition. Japanese manga and animation were very popular, while Chinese local animation was climbing uphill. Although many people of insight in the industry have called for the Chinese spirit of animation, in the process of rapid growth, everyone rushed forward desperately and did not show a consensus in practice. Six years have passed, and the entire animation industry has undergone great changes. We have changed from a major country in the introduction of animation to a major country in animation production. Everyone’s pace has slowed down. You can calm down and look back on your development more rationally and think about the future direction. It is also more conducive to focusing on issues and reaching consensus. This is also the development process that Chinese animation must go through.

Therefore, it is logical to re-plan a large-scale animation exhibition on the basis of the 2009 exhibition, that is, to hold the "Chinese School of World Animation-Chinese and Foreign Animation Art Exhibition". The difference between this exhibition and the 2009 exhibition is the addition of foreign animation content. The curator attempts to explore the position of Chinese animation in the world's animation territory and the connotation of the "Chinese school" through vertical and horizontal comparisons between China and foreign countries and academic combing. And the "Road to the Future".

In fact, the "Chinese School" in the field of animation started in the 1960s. At the beginning of the establishment of the Shanghai Film Studio in 1957, it put forward the slogan "Exploring the Road to National Style", and thus began the nation of Chinese animation. The concentrated exploration of style has achieved impressive results. A number of excellent animation works with Chinese national characteristics have been produced successively, such as "Little Tadpoles Looking for Mother", "Breaking Out in Heaven", "Shepherd Flute" and "Fisher Boy", etc., exuding unique artistic charm and winning Chinese animation at home and abroad. Very high reputation, created the golden age of Chinese animation.

That was an era that could not be replicated. Under the conditions of a planned economy, the state poured manpower, material resources, and financial resources to gather a group of talented and well-educated art masters. With artistic ideals, they focused on creation in a relatively closed environment. Not affected by the market, intensive cultivation. Since the reform and opening up, with the establishment of the socialist market economic system and the continuous deepening of globalization, Japanese and Western animation culture has been widely introduced, and the animation creation and production mechanisms and communication methods have undergone great changes. Chinese national animation is facing great challenges , Fell into low ebb for a while. Since 2006, the state has vigorously supported the development of the animation industry and adopted a series of protection and support policies. After 10 years of hard work, great results have been achieved. The scale of domestic animation production and the number of works have shown a blowout development, and its richness And diversity is unprecedented, get rid of the shortage situation, and build self-confidence. However, the quantity has gone up, but there are not many high-quality works, especially classic works with profound ideas, exquisite art, and well-made, with distinctive national characteristics.

It is the proposition of the times for Chinese animation to further establish the awareness of high-quality goods on the basis of prosperous creation, encourage innovation on the basis of inheriting tradition, encourage the exchange and mutual learning of Chinese and foreign cultures, and create a group of influential leading figures. Today, it is even more significant to re-establish the "Chinese School" of animation art. With this as the goal, shaping the new glory of Chinese animation art has become the conscious pursuit of more and more Chinese animation people. I think this is also the theme of this exhibition.
